Important Updates on Company Car Taxation from the Autumn Budget 2024

The Autumn Budget 2024 introduces several changes impacting the tax treatment of company cars and vans for employees. With a particular emphasis on encouraging the shift toward electric vehicles. Here’s a summary of the key updates and what they mean for employees and employers.

Incentives for Electric Vehicles and Adjusted Rates for Hybrids

To promote the use of electric vehicles (EVs), the government has extended the previously established company car tax rates through to the 2029/30 tax year. This extension aims to provide stability for both taxpayers and the automotive industry.

What does this mean for company car users?

  • Electric Vehicles: The tax rates for EVs will remain favorable, helping employees and businesses reduce tax liabilities.
  • Hybrids: Tax rates for hybrid vehicles will increase slightly to better align with those of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. This change is designed to encourage a switch to full EVs.

Pro Tip: For employees considering a company car, opting for an EV may continue to be a tax-efficient choice for years to come, given the favorable rates.

Updated Taxable Benefits for Fuel and Vans

The figures used to calculate the tax benefits of employer-provided vehicles and fuel are set to increase slightly in line with inflation:

  • Company Fuel Benefit: For employees using company fuel for private journeys, the calculation base will increase from £27,800 to £28,200.
  • Van Benefits: For company vans used for more than incidental private travel. The taxable benefit will rise from £3,960 to £4,020. While the fuel benefit increases from £757 to £769 in the 2025/26 tax year.

New Rules for Double Cab Pick-Up Vehicles

Following a Court of Appeal judgment, double cab pick-up vehicles with a payload of one tonne or more will now be treated as cars for tax purposes. This treatment will apply to vehicles purchased on or after April 1, 2025, for corporation tax and April 6, 2025, for income tax.

Key Details:

  • Pre-2025 Purchases: Vehicles purchased or leased before these dates will continue to qualify under existing capital allowance and benefit-in-kind rules until the vehicle is disposed of. The lease expires, or April 5, 2029, whichever comes first.
  • Future Implications: This change may influence employers and employees in their decision-making. As double cab pick-ups will no longer offer the same tax advantage as they once did.

What These Changes Mean for Employers and Employees

The extension of favorable tax rates on EVs and increased alignment for hybrid and combustion vehicles reflects the government’s continued push toward sustainability. Employers may find additional incentives in offering EVs as company cars. While employees using company fuel or vans should prepare for slight increases in their taxable benefits.
